CompTIA Linux+The CompTIA Linux+ certification is an entry level certification for Linux systems professionals. It is a multiple choice style exam testing you on the fundamentals of installing, operation, and troubleshooting Linux systems. It is intended for individuals with at least six months of Linux experience.

Linux Professional InstituteLinux Professional Institute (LPI) offers two vendor neutral Linux certifications: Junior Level Administration (LPIC-1) and Intermediate Level Administration (LPIC-2). They are currently developing a Senior Level Administration certification. Each certification requires two exams and the LPIC-2 certification requires a candidate to pass the LPIC-1 certification exams.

NovellNovell offers three certifications: Certified Linux Professional (CLP), Certified Linux Engineer (Novell CLE), and Certified Linux Engineer9 (Novell CLE9). Novell's certifications are SUSE Linux specific, unlike the LPI or CompTIA Linux+ certifications. If you are a systems administrator who wants to focus on Novell products, the CLP and CLE certifications are good ones to attain.
Red HatRed Hat has developed its Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) to certidy individuals on its core Enterprise operating system. In addition, it also has the Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) and Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) certifications available. The RHCE certification is the mid level certification and features a hands on test measuring your ability on live systems. This has raised the image of the exam in minds of Red Hat based companies.
